Caring For Azaleas

The winter protection for azaleas is a part of the necessary cultivation – in the broadest sense – aimed at the proper development and maintenance of the shrub. Therefore, in order to adequately protect the azalea from the low winter temperatures, several other correct treatments of the plant must have been carried out, whether the azalea has been planted in the pot or on the ground.

First of all, the soil in which planting azaleas must have an acidic reaction. The reason is that azalea is an acidophilic plant and thrives only in such an environment. Then the soil medium should have excellent drainage. And finally, fertilization and irrigation of the plant must have been made in such a way that the azalea has been properly prepared to successfully cope with – at times – the winter test.

Preparing Azalea for the Winter

Effective winter azalea protection begins in the summer. This does not mean that the azalea must necessarily go to sea for swim, but it means that the fertilizer supply to the plant must be stopped at this time.

More precisely, the azalea fertilization stops around mid or late summer. Providing nutrients after this period will result in the creation of new shoots that will not prevent them being woody by the end of autumn.

These azalea shoots with the first low winter temperatures will burn out and at the same time they will form the entrance gate of several pathogens.

In relation to irrigation, the watering of azaleas during the autumn period should gradually be diluted.

For most areas, one to two irrigations a week, with half or less of normal water, are enough to prepare the plant, with the prospect of ending autumn at the end – if the soil moisture around the roots is satisfactory.

The azalea irrigation will be repeated in the frosty areas after the first two frosts, so as not to let the plant «dry».

Winter Protection for Azaleas

The winter protection for azaleas planted in the garden, is of two kinds: mulch covering the soil around the bush and covering the bush itself.

In the first case – which can be applied not only for the winter protection of the azalea but also for the protection of any other vulnerable plant at low temperatures – soil cover is achieved with a layer of organic material around the plant.

These materials may be pine bark, pine needles or straw. The use of dry leaves should be avoided if they have not been choped first.

Dry leaves tend to form a solid layer around the plant, which can have devastating consequences for the azalea roots.

The thickness of the mulch is proportional to how low the temperatures fall.

In areas where the minimum temperature reaches -2 to -3 ° C, a suitable layer thickness is from 7 to 10 cm.

In areas where the minimum temperatures are below -4 oC the thickness of the layer varies from 10-15 cm.

However, regardless of mulch thickness, special care must be taken that the layer does not completely cover the area around the trunk of the plant.

If this happens then it can cause rot or insect damage that will strike or even smite the azalea bush.

The second method of winter protection of azalea consists in the complete covering of the plant.

It is carried out in areas where frequent strong winter winds occur and temperatures fall extremely low.

The plants are covered with a special frost blanket or any other porous material (e.g. burlap).

It must be stressed, however, that in the last two cases it is necessary to create some kind of sturdy skeleton where it will adapt the materials, which must not touch the foliage in any way.

As everything is done properly, the winter protection for azaleas will be the prerequisite for its explosive spring flowering that will take place without problems, filling the garden with colors.
