The Glossy Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’ is medium sized multistemmed shrub with a height and diameter of 1-1.5 m. The largest dimension of cultivar is achieved when planted in areas with hotter winters. It is a medium growth rate, spherical in shape, with slightly arched shoots, which when young are red in color and mature in greyish-brown coloration. Its shiny leaves, 1.5 to 3 cm long, unlike other Glossy Abelia varieties, retain the original reddish color and the summer. Flowers of the Glossy Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’ are blossoming in cluster inflorescences, they are abundant and fragrant and their color is lilac-pink. It has a long blooming period, starting from the late spring and lasting until the first cold.

In the warmer areas it keeps its foliage all year long, while in the cooler it can lose from 50% to the whole of its leaves. Its resistance to low temperatures reaches -12 to -15 °C (5 to 10 °F – USDA Hardiness zone 7b).

The Glossy Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’, when found in the right conditions, has a life span of over 30 years.

The ‘Edward Goucher’ hybrid is the product of the cross between the species Abelia chinensis and Abelia uniflora carried out by the American Edward Goucher, which is why it bears its name. The variety, for its attractive features, has been awarded the Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
